How to Cut a Formica Water Jet

A water jet cutter slices through thick materials, including Formica. Formica is a hard, plastic laminate often used to make countertops and doors. Using a water jet to cut Formica will result in smooth, accurate cuts. Before using a water jet, familiarize yourself with the operation instructions.

Instructions

      Press "Mode Select." Press "C" to view the catalog of programs. Scroll to the preinstalled program of your choice. To manually create a program, follow the manufacturer's instructions.

      Press "Mode Select." Press "G" to start the test sequence. Press "Clear" when the sequence is complete.

      Press "Cycle Start." Enter your name using the system keyboard.

      Turn water jet valve #3 to the right to open it and begin water flow. Turn water jet valve #3 to the left to close it once the tank is filled with water. Turn water jet valves #1 and #2 to the right to open them.

      Power on the water jet motor while the pressure control knob is set to the minimum position.

      Insert the base plate into the water jet chamber. Tighten the clamps to secure the base plate inside the chamber. Lay the Formica on top of the base plate. Lay the mounting blocks on top of the base plate. Position the mounting blocks so they do not touch the Formica.

      Press "Start." Press "Mode Select." Scroll to "JOG" to jog the nozzle.

      Rotate the knob inside the chamber to adjust the nozzle height so it touches the top of the Formica. Press "JOG" to reset the nozzle position. Close the water chamber door.

      Press "Mode Select." Scroll to "Auto(1)." Press "Clear."

      Review the instruction manual and adjust the feed rate to the low setting. Set "Abrasive" to "Auto." Set "High Pressure" to "Auto."

      Move the pressure control knob and slowly increase water pressure. Review the instruction manual and enter the pounds per square inch to the manufacturer's recommendations. 35,000 Ksi will work for most materials.

      Press "Cycle Start" to begin cutting the Formica.
