How to Check the Output of a MIG Welder

Knowing the voltage output of your welder is important because the various voltage settings can affect the weld differently. If you are having problems checking the output of your MIG welder, use a multimeter to test the output of the unit. This is a small electronic device that can measure DC voltage output on the welder. You don't need to know much about electronics to use a multimeter.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your MIG welder and ensure that the power cable is securely connected to the port at the rear of the unit.

    • 2

Turn on your multimeter. Set the dial on the front of the unit to "DC V." This means it will read in DC voltage.

    • 3

Insert the included red lead into the port marked "+" on the front of the unit.

    • 4

Insert the included black lead into the port marked "-" on the front of the unit.

    • 5

Touch the black lead to something not on the welding gun. Make sure what you touch does not carry an electrical current. This will ground the lead.

    • 6

Touch the red lead to the area of the power cable where it connects to the port on the back of the MIG welder. The multimeter will display the output voltage of the welder.
