How to Install a Pattern Makers Vice

The Pattern Maker's vice is an Emmert style vice that gives the user complete control over the angle at which something is held in place. Its ability to rotate 360 degrees gives this vice it's characteristic versatility. Installing the vice is slightly challenging because a shallow channel needs to be chiseled into the table for the mounting bracket to fit right. Although this requires hard work, the versatility of this vice is well worth the effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 4 inches away from right edge of a 2-inch-thick work bench where you want to mount the vice, and make a mark with a pencil.

    • 2

Measure, from the 4-inch mark made in Step 1, 2 and 5/8 inches from the bottom edge of the table and make a mark with a pencil.

    • 3

Measure 2 and 5/8 inches from the bottom of the table 6 and 1/8 inches to the left of the mark made in Step 1 and make a mark with a pencil.

    • 4

Connect all marks using a straight edge and pencil to create an outline for the grove where the mounting bracket will get fastened.

    • 5

Chisel a 3/8-inch-deep wedge around the perimeter of the mounting bracket guide by holding the chisel on the marked line at a 90-degree angle and tapping the top lightly with a hammer until the required depth has been reached.

    • 6

Hold the chisel against the wood at a 45-degree angle and tap the top lightly with a hammer to chisel out a 3/8-inch-deep groove for the mounting bracket.

    • 7

Measure 3/8 inches from the bottom of the wood where the groove has been chiseled and draw a straight line connecting it to both the left and right edges of the groove.

    • 8

Place the chisel along the line drawn in Step 7 at a 90-degree angle and tap the end firmly until it breaks through the bottom of the table.

    • 9

Fit the mounting bracket into the chiseled out groove and secure it place by fastening it to the table with the screws provided using a flat head screwdriver.
