How to Build a Rock Cutter

A rock cutter is a machine with a distinctive blade that cuts or shapes rocks. Artists who work with stone and geologists who study rocks use them. Professional contractors who do home renovations that involve laying stone or ceramic tile use tabletop rock cutters. This machine provides clean, smooth and precise cuts. Renting one of these machines can get expensive, especially if you have a lot of rock or tile to cut. You can create your own rock cutter by modifying a circular saw and attaching a blade that can cut rock.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a rock-cutting blade. The quality of the blade chosen depends upon the density of the rock and how much cutting you are going to do. Diamond-tipped blades are commonly used to cut rock. Most are abrasive but not sharp.

    • 2

Unscrew the bolt on the circular saw that holds the blade in place. This is done with either a hex key that came with the saw or an adjustable wrench.

    • 3

Lift up the blade guard to expose the blade.

    • 4

Remove the standard blade from the saw with gloved hands.

    • 5

Slide the new rock-cutting blade onto the saw. There should be an arrow on the blade and one on the blade guard. Both arrows must point in the same direction.

    • 6

Push the blade guard back down over the blade.

    • 7

Tighten the bolt to securely fasten the blade to the saw.
