How to Align a Boring Machine

Misalignment of a boring machine spindle results in inaccurate cuts and wasted materials. Prevent the loss of money and materials by properly aligning the spindle. To accurately align the spindle, use a laser sight alignment system. Laser sights are purchased from heavy machinery manufacturers and online retailers.

Instructions

      Attach the laser sight to the end of the spindle where the jig is attached.

      Measure the distance between the tip of the laser sight and the work table. Enter the distance into the handheld unit supplied with the laser sight kit. Confirm the measurement by hitting the “Confirm” or “Enter” button.

      Enter the number of bolts on the work surface into the handheld unit. The bolts referenced are the bolts arranged in a circle.

      Measure the distance between the two bolts at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions. Enter the distance on the handheld unit and confirm the measurement.

      Lay the measuring unit at the 9 o’clock position. Record the reading and confirm. Move the measuring unit to the 12 o’clock position. Record the reading and confirm. Move the measuring unit to the 3 o’clock position. Record the reading and confirm. The overall results are shown on the screen.

      Press the “Live” button to take live readings of the accuracy as you adjust the bolts.

      Turn the bolt clockwise to lower it or counterclockwise to raise it. The readings for each bolt are shown on the handheld unit. Adjust the bolts until each bolt reads the same distance from the laser sight.
