Central Machinery 43389 Drill Press Parts

Central Machinery makes a complete line of electric, cordless and air-powered tools for hobby or commercial use. The tools, sold by Harbor Freight, are a discount brand that provides many tools at less than half the cost of other brands. The 43389 drill press is an upright stand press that comes disassembled, so understanding the basic parts will help you get started with your drill press.
  1. Base

    • The base of the 43389 is a heavy metal plate, featuring a vertical cylinder collar, or column tube, that receives the bottom end of the press support column. If your press is new, bolt these pieces together. Although the base is weighted, it is not designed to balance the press under all normal use. It is recommended that the base be bolted to your work space floor. The hardware for this is not provided with your drill press, for the simple reason that the hardware to use depends on the floor. For wooden floors, anchor the base with lag bolts at least 1 inch longer than the thickness of the base. For concrete floors, use a tapcon-style concrete screw at least 1 inch longer than the thickness of the base.

    Column

    • The column of the 43389 is made from a hollow metal pipe with a ridged strip running vertically up one side for the table crank to make its adjustments by. The column fits into the column tube at its base and fits inside the bottom of the head assembly at the top. It serves as the spine of the machine, connecting the base to the head, and positioning the table.

    Table

    • The Table of the 43389 is mounted to a collar-type support which will need to be assembled if your press is new. This support is made up of the support collar itself, which slides up and down the column freely, the table crank, which stops the free movement and allows incremental adjustment and the table clamp, which tightens with a screw mechanism to lock the support in place at the desired height. The table is attached via a pivot on its underside that rests in a round clamp at the end of the support and allows the table to pivot for further adjustment.

    Head Assembly

    • The head assembly rests atop the column and is the framework that the motor and pulley head are attached to. It also houses the arbor and drill spindle, which do the actual work of boring. The head assembly should always be mounted tight to the top of the column and kept in line with the base, so the weight of the motor and pulley are balanced over the base. The motor of the 43389 is attached to the back of the assembly with bolts, while the pulley assembly is mounted to the top, attaching to the top of the motor and the top of the drill arbor to drive the press.
