How to MIG Weld a Lower Unit

Metal inert gas, or MIG, welding guns join two pieces of metal together, using a point-and-click method. MIG welding guns can reach temperatures of up to 10.000 degrees F, making them effective tools to weld metal. When you are welding a lower unit, you need to check on the materials of the upper units. Only MIG welds the lower unit if the upper units are made of non-flammable materials.

  Remove all materials from the upper unit and store the items away from the work area. The heat of the welding gun can cause fires.

  Turn the gas valve on the gas container in a counterclockwise direction to start the flow of gas to the MIG welding gun.

  Turn on the “Power” button on the MIG welding controller.

  Kneel or squat on a level surface and stay in a stable position. Total balance is extremely important.

  Point the tip of the welding gun upward to the area where you want to join the metal pieces.

  Press the trigger of the welding gun and move the gun from left to right in a cursive “e” or “u” pattern. Repeat until the weld is completed. Let the metal cool for one hour.

  Turn off the “Power” button on the MIG welding controller and turn the gas valve on the gas container in a clockwise direction to end the flow of gas.
