How to Repair a DeWalt Cordless Drill Keyless Chuck

DeWalt cordless drills may come equipped with a keyless chuck. This is a convenience for power tool users who tend to misplace the chuck key. If the chuck key becomes lost, attaching and removing drill bits becomes a real hassle. Keyless chucks are designed to alleviate this problem. Unfortunately, this means that when the chuck becomes frozen, you have to use alternative methods to change out the chuck on your DeWalt cordless drill.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Hold your DeWalt cordless drill in one hand and insert a screwdriver into the chuck.

    • 2

Turn the screwdriver clockwise several times to loosen the retaining screw on the inside of the chuck. Do not attempt to turn the screw counterclockwise in the normal fashion for unfastening it as it may break or strip the head.

    • 3

Set the gear setting to low then wrap a shop rag around your DeWalt cordless drill and place it in a table vise. Tighten the vise to hold the drill in place but not so tight that you crack the drill.

    • 4

Select the largest Allen wrench that will fit into the chuck and insert it into the chuck.

    • 5

Tighten the chuck, if possible, then tap the Allen wrench counterclockwise with a hammer to break the chuck free from the DeWalt cordless drill. Pull off the chuck.
