How to Use a Self Centering Hinge Drill Bit

A pilot hole is a hole used to guide a screw into a mounting surface. If you have ever drilled a pilot hole slightly off center, you understand the amount of repair work this issue can cause. A slight miscalculation in the placement of the pilot hole can cause the head of a screw to protrude from the surface of the counter-bored hole in a door hinge plate. You can avoid this by using a self-centering hinge drill bit. This spring-loaded tool attaches to a regular hand drill and allows you to center the pilot holes by using the counter-bored holes in the hinge plate.

Instructions

      Secure a double-screw Phillip’s screwdriver bit into the jaws of an electric or cordless drill and tighten the chuck.

      Slide the shank of the drill bit into the self-centering housing until you feel the end of the drill bit butt up against the back of the housing. Tighten the setscrew on the side of the housing with an Allen wrench to lock the drill bit into place.

      Slide the self-centering housing over the double-screw Phillips screwdriver bit as far as it will go. The Phillip’s bit seats inside a slot inside the housing. Manually turn the housing with your hand. If seated properly, the chuck on the drill will spin as well.

      Place the tip of the shaft at the end the self-centering housing directly over the counter-bored hole in the hinge and hold the drill perpendicular to the hinge plate.

      Press the trigger on the drill as you press on the back of the drill simultaneously. The shaft recedes into the housing and allows the drill bit to drill into the surface below the hinge plate. The tip of the shaft on the self-centering housing stays centered in the counter-bored hole in the hinge plate and ensures that the drill bit goes in straight and centered.
