How to Prevent Overflow on Oil Water Separators

An oil/water separator uses gravity to separate oil particles from water molecules. Oil is lighter and less dense than water, so when the two are mixed together, oil naturally floats to the top. As the oil floats to the top in an oil/water separator, it flows through an opening that leads to a receptacle. If the separator overflows, it means something is clogged. Regular maintenance should prevent the oil/water separator from overflowing.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the flow rate of the water per the manufacturer’s instructions. If the flow is quicker than the drainage rate of the separator, water will accumulate in the tub and overflow once the tub is filled. Consult the owner’s manual for the separator’s recommended water flow rate.

    • 2

Open the drain valve and drain the separator.

    • 3

Inspect the drain valve and clear it of any obstructions.

    • 4

Remove any visible dirt and debris. Clean the separator with soap and water. Clean the separator a minimum of every six months.
