How to Cut a Tool's Protective Coating

Many tools feature a protective coating. This coating serves to protect your hands from the bare metal and helps you maintain a firm grip on the tool. It also prolongs the life of the tool by protecting the metal from corrosive materials that may come into contact with it. If you want to put a new protective coating onto a tool, you will have to first remove the old coating.

Things You'll Need

  • Tool with protective coating
  • Utility knife
  • Assortment of pliers
  • Rag (optional)
  • Turpentine or mineral spirits (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Score the protective coating, using the utility knife. Do this until you reach bare metal. Score the old coating until you are able to remove it with little effort. Score it in several places on the handle, if necessary.

    • 2

Peel the protective coating off of the tool until only the bare metal is exposed. Use pliers to pull away stubborn pieces, if necessary. Discard the old protective coating.

    • 3

Remove any remaining sticky residue. This can be done by rubbing the surface with a rag dipped in turpentine or mineral spirits. The tool is now ready to accept new protective coating, if desired.
