How to Adjust Carbon on a TS 420 Cutoff Saw

Cutoff saws are heavy-duty saws that are used in concrete work to actually cut cement or concrete. The TS 420 is a cutoff saw manufactured by Stihl. The Stihl cutoff saw uses a 14-inch carbon composite blade, which is referred as the carbon, or abrasive wheel. From time to time, the carbon may need to either be replaced if it has become frayed or worn, or simply adjusted if it becomes slightly misaligned. Adjusting or replacing the carbon takes about 15 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch the cutoff saw to the "Off" position.

    • 2

Insert the locking pin, which comes with the saw, through the small hole in the V-belt guard in order to lock the shaft.

    • 3

Use an adjustable wrench to loosen and remove the hex bolt that holds the carbon in place. Remove the washer beneath the hex bolt by hand.

    • 4

Slide the old cutting wheel, or carbon, off. Re-seat the old carbon, or install a new carbon by sliding it back into place by hand. Gently rock the carbon by hand to make certain it sits flush against the mounting area. Make sure the directional arrows on the carbon are pointing in the right direction when seating it.

    • 5

Replace the washer and then tighten the retaining hex bolt with the adjustable wrench.

    • 6

Remove the locking pin from the V-belt guard by hand.
