How to Check a Feeler Gauge

Feeler gauges are strips of metal that measure a specific thickness. They allow you to quickly check gaps to ensure they are within tolerance. For example, you can check the gap between a spark plug tip and diode by sliding the appropriate gauge between the two pieces. However, over time, the feeler gauge can wear down, especially if you use it a lot. Check your feeler gauges on a regular basis to ensure they still measure the appropriate thickness.

Instructions

    • 1

Wet a rag with mineral spirits and swipe the feeler gauge clean. Oil and dirt buildup can greatly affect the thickness of a feeler gauge.

    • 2

Dry the feeler gauge with a microfiber rag to remove any mineral spirit residue from the feeler gauge.

    • 3

Measure the thickness with a calibrated zero-to-one micrometer. To do so, position the tip of the feeler gauge between the base and anvil of the micrometer and rotate the dial clockwise to close in on the gauge. Take the reading from the micrometer.
