Trimming Tile With an Angle Grinder

Tiles are normally cut with a tile-cutting board or a wet saw, although it depends on the type of tile, since natural stones and ceramics cut differently. However, you can also cut tiles with an angle grinder, as long as a tile-cutting blade is used and the proper precautions are taken. Angle grinders are ideal for trimming tile, because you can control the tool with greater accuracy compared to a tile-cutting board or a saw.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the piece of tile against the spot where you need to install it to see how much you need to trim off the angle. If it's just a little bit (1/8 inch or less) you can simply trim the piece, but if it's more, you'll need to prepare the tile with masking tape to keep the face from chipping.

    • 2

Trim slight sections with the angle grinder by using the underside of the blade. Rather than cutting into the piece of tile, you want to place the blade of the grinder against the edge of the section you're trimming, so that the piece of tile is perpendicular to the grinder blade and you're grinding away the section you need to trim rather than cutting.

Cover the face of the tile with a piece of masking tape if you need to trim a larger section. Apply the tape so that the your cut area is within the masking tape. Mark the top of the masking tape with a pencil and align the grinder blade with the mark to cut the tile down to the angle you need.
