Cut away the section of insulation surrounding the metal with a drywall saw. You can also remove the nails holding the insulation in place with the back of a hammer and set the entire section aside. If the insulation is foam, cut through the insulation with the saw and set it aside while you work. Clear a 24-inch section of insulation around the metal you want to weld.
Put on safety gear including a respirator mask, welding visor, welding apron and gloves. Make sure the area where you weld is well-ventilated.
Weld the two pieces of metal together holding the torch at least 24 inches away from your face. Try not to get any sparks onto the surrounding insulation. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand to dissipate any sparks that get onto the insulation. Allow the metal to cool for two hours.
Replace the insulation back over the metal, either with nails if the foam is in board form, or by taping the insulation in place with duct tape.
