How to Bevel Cut With a Tile Saw

Tile installations occasionally require bevel cuts, which are cuts that are angled relative to a tile's thickness Beveled edges are particularly useful for tiling wall corners. Angled edges allow you to closely butt tiles and reduce the width of the unattractive grout line that occurs where the tiles meet. Creating bevel cuts with tile saws varies according to the design of the saw. Whereas some saws adjust the angle of the cut by tilting the blade, other saws adjust by tilting the table.

Instructions

  1. Tilting Blade Design

    • 1

Put on safety gear, including goggles, gloves and ear plugs. Lay a straight edge across the tile. Align the straight edge across the desired path of the cut. Draw a pencil or marker along the side of the straightedge to mark the path of the cut. Use a marker for glazed tile and a pencil for unsealed tile, as a marker will stain unsealed tile such as saltillo.

    • 2

Locate the release knob or lever on the tile saw's cutting head. Pull the knob or level to release the cutting head from the locked position. Locate the angle guide or gauge at the side of the cutting head. Tilt the cutting head until the angle guide or gauge indicates the desired angle of the bevel, such as 45 degrees.

    • 3

Release the knob to lock the head in position. Activate the tile saw. Align the cut mark with the spinning blade, and carefully push the tile through the blade along the cut line. When the blade nears the end of the tile, complete the cut with a push stick or tile guide. Never allow your hands to come near the blade.

    Tilting Table Design

    • 4

Put on safety gear, including goggles, gloves and ear plugs. Use a straightedge and marker or pencil to lay out and mark the path of the cut across the tile. Locate the release knob or lever at the front or side of the tile saw's base. Loosen the knob or lever to release the tile saw's table from its locked position.

    • 5

Find the angle guide or gauge attached to the saw's table. Tilt the entire table until the guide or gauge indicates the desired angle. Tighten the knob or lever to fix the table at the desired angle.

    • 6

Activate the saw. Align the cut mark with the tile saw blade. Carefully push the tile through the blade along the mark. Use a push stick or tile guide to complete the final portion of the cut.
