How to Use Crescent Nail Pullers

The Crescent Nail Puller Model 56 is ideal for removing old and rusty nails that have sunk into worn, soft wood. It consists of an 18-inch long bar with a round handle at one end and a pair of plier-like jaws and a lever at the other end. The jaws grasp embedded nails, and you use the lever as a fulcrum to pull the nail out of the wood once the jaws are firmly clenched around the nail head. You need a hammer to activate the jaws so that they open and then snap around the nail head.

Instructions

  1. Crescent Model 56

    • 1

Position the jaws of the nail puller around the nail that needs to be removed. Move the fulcrum lever at the side of the jaws down, if necessary, so that the point that juts out at the top is flush with the surface in which the nail is embedded.

    • 2

Strike the top of the nail puller with one sharp blow of a hammer. Check to see that the jaws of the puller have grabbed the nail. Strike the top of the puller again, if needed, to make sure the puller jaws securely grip the nail. Reposition the jaws if they have slipped and closed away from the nail.

    • 3

Pull the top handle of the nail puller toward the side of the surface on which the fulcrum lever rests until you completely remove the nail.

    • 4

Place the nail puller, jaws down, over a garbage can or other waste receptacle. Push the fulcrum lever toward the jaws of the puller to eject the nail from the jaws into the waste receptacle.
