Removing a Stuck Drill From Wood

Nothing can throw a wrench in your home improvement project quite like getting one of your tools stuck in your remodeling materials. Unlike screws, bolts and nails, drill bits do not have a "handle" to grip when they get stuck. Drill bits can prove nearly impossible to remove if they have broken off deep in a piece of wood or in one of your wall studs. Fortunately, there are specialized extractor tools that can be used if vise grips or pliers prove ineffective.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Exposed Shaft

    • 1

Grip the shaft of the exposed drill bit with a pair or pliers or vise grips.

    • 2

Turn the drill bit counterclockwise to remove it from the wood.

    • 3

Measure the drill bit with a pair of calipers to determine the bore size and use a similar sized bit to complete your project.

    Embedded Shaft

    • 4

Determine the size of the stuck bit by measuring it with a pair of calipers.

    • 5

Select a bit from the bolt extractor set that is slightly smaller than the embedded drill bit.

    • 6

Attach the bolt extractor bit to a power drill and drill halfway through the stuck drill bit.

    • 7

Fix the bolt extractor to the bolt extractor tool.

    • 8

Press the tip of the bolt extractor into the drilled hole and twist the tool to thread the extractor into the bit until the bit comes free of the wood.
