How Does a Carton Stapler Work?

Carton staplers, found at office supply and home repair stores, are a heavy-duty type of stapler designed to seal boxes and cartons without a fuss. These powerful devices can be set to several depth settings. Sturdy carton staplers are made for commercial use, so you can use them repeatedly.
  1. Settings

    • You can choose which staple size you need. This will depend on the type and thickness of the material you are going to use your carton stapler on. Carton staplers come in a number of shapes and types, as well. You can buy manual, electric and air carton staplers, depending on your preference. Choose units that are mounted to a table, portable or even foot-operated to get your job done.

    Instructions

    • To load the stapler, press the stopper, and pull out the pusher unit. Place two sticks of compatible staples all the way forward at the front of the magazine unit, and push the pusher unit back in place. Use a screwdriver to move the adjusting rod to the correct height for your selected staple size. Re-tighten the screws before using the stapler. Put the tool over the spot you want to staple, and press down on the handle to release the staple.

    Troubleshooting

    • If your carton stapler becomes jammed, press the stopper, and pull out the pusher unit. Remove the magazine unit using a flat head screwdriver, and pull out the offending staple. Put the tool back together, and test it out. If you are encountering frequent jams or notice an uneven clinch, you are likely using the wrong-sized staples. If your carton stapler is delivering unclinched staples, you'll need to change the device's teeth.

    Safety Tips

    • Read your manual carefully before using your carton stapler since they all work differently. Don't point your device at anyone, and wear safety goggles when operating it. Don't push the handle unless the carton stapler is fully against the item you're trying to staple. Keep your hands and other body parts away from the device's staple-clinching area. Do not allow children to use your carton stapler or play near it. And replace any old or defective parts promptly.
