How Can a Basement With Concrete Walls Be Finished?

While some people choose to leave their basements unfinished, with nothing more than the slab floor, the walls and the HVAC equipment, you may choose to finish yours. The design options are nearly limitless, and if you want to cover the concrete walls and other areas to custom finish your basement, the only real limitation is your budget.
  1. Tile

    • To cover the floor, you have many options, such as carpet and hardwood, but when it comes to the walls, it is important to select a material that will last for years. Ceramic and natural stone tiles are good choices for walls in your basement, and they can complement a wide array of other materials, given the variety of colors and styles.

    Wood Paneling

    • Wood paneling can look as modern or as old-fashioned as you want it to, which means you can customize your basement as you see fit. One old-fashioned method is to use old barn or fence material, run wainscoting a third of the way up the wall, and cover the rest of the wall to the ceiling with old, recycled tin from roofs. A more modern choice would be to use cedar or pine paneling all the way up, or use even an exotic hardwood such as Brazilian cherry.

    Basement Bar

    • If you want to turn your basement into a game room, include the tried-and-true design selection of a basement bar. You can make the bar as large as you want, running around one wall, two or even wrapping around the majority of the room in a restaurant-style theme. Use mirrors, cabinets and other wall hangings to cover the concrete to finish off your basement.

    Stucco

    • While stucco is more popular as an outdoor finish, stucco can be applied directly onto concrete walls for a rustic, handcrafted look. Choose from a variety of different finishes, such as a hand-troweled look, the knock-down pattern or anything in between. You can also add pigments to the stucco to change the color to match your other decor.
