How to Laminate Stairs Without Stringers

Using laminate on open stairs is possible with the right materials. Stringers are the baseboards that run along the sides of a stairway. Some stairs are completely enclosed by walls while others are framed with only short boards. For stairs without stringers, traditional installation of laminate flooring will result in exposed raw edges. These give an incomplete appearance to the finished product. By choosing the proper installation method and finishing product, the edges are covered and the project is professional in appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off any overhang on the stairs. Each stair riser must make a 90-degree angle with the step. Cut carefully and use 220 grit sandpaper to smooth the edges.

    • 2

Measure the steps and risers in width to the very edge. The edge of the cut laminate should be flush with the edge of the open stairs. Measure the depth of the step from the edge to the riser. The edge of the cut laminate should be flush with the riser.

    • 3

Install the laminate on the step tops using adhesive. Consult with a professional for the best adhesive for the selected laminate. Push the first piece flush to the edge of the riser. Begin with a full piece next to the riser and finish with a cut piece if necessary on the edge.

    • 4

Cover the risers with the laminate. Begin at the top, pressing the edge of the laminate to the edge of the laminate on the step area. Begin with a full piece and cut a piece to sit flush at the bottom onto the next step down.

    • 5

Add corner trim to the step. Measure and cut thin corner trim pieces to cover the edges of the laminated steps. Glue in place.

    • 6

Cover the edges of the steps with flat trim. Cut a 45-degree right angle on the end of the pieces for the edge of the steps and 45 degree left angles for the risers with a circular or hand saw. The pieces will fit together to cover the 90- degree angle steps and cover the rough edges of the stairs.
