DIY Knee Wall Wood Caps

Known under a variety of names ranging from pony wall to half wall, a knee wall is a wall that comes up to around waist height. It is commonly seen in bathrooms as the separation between the toilet area and the actual shower, but it can also be used in any other area of the home, such as at the end of a cabinet where it separates the kitchen from the living room or as a room divider where a front door opens directly into the living room. As long as you have basic carpentry skills and knowledge, you can easily add custom wood caps to your knee walls to help them serve as handy ledges.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height, width and length of the knee wall. Decide what type of wood material you want and purchase it from your local home improvement store according to your measurements. Order roughly 15 percent more than what you think you need, so you can make adjustments on-site as needed.

Transfer the measurements to your wood. Cut the pieces down to width with the circular saw. Set the depth of the blade to the width of your wood, mark the piece accordingly with a pencil and tape measure, and run the blade of the circular saw through the wood. Cut the ends off for the length of the pieces with the miter saw. Measure for the vertical section first, with the horizontal section capping the top of the vertical piece.

Attach the pieces on top of your knee wall to cap the ends. Install the vertical section first, and then the horizontal section on top of that. Apply wood glue to the outside of the knee wall and then nail the finish cap pieces in place with the finish nailer. Let the glue dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions before finishing the wood caps.

Create beveled edges if you so desire with the router. Otherwise, you can simply create a slightly-rounded edge with the palm sander when you are sanding the pieces. Fill the nail holes with the wood putty and use the palm sander to completely sand down the pieces. After they are sanded, finish the caps according to your personal preference -- stain, paint or leave the wood raw.
