Do-It-Yourself Shotcrete Walls

Concrete is one of the most durable building materials used around the world, and while it is traditionally either poured for slabs and walls, or as a mortar for blocks and bricks, it can also be sprayed onto a wall or other surface. This form of concrete is known as shotcrete, and, at its most basic level, it is simply another form of applying concrete to a surface. Its consistency is similar to normal concrete that is poured for slabs, but instead of being poured, it is forced through a hose like paint through a sprayer, and applied via a nozzle on the end of the hose.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on all of the safety gear so that you don’t get any concrete on you during the shotcrete process. Put a bag of dry-mix concrete into the mixer and add water according to the instructions on the bag. Different bags have different requirements. Let the machine mix the concrete for several minutes, then empty it into a wheelbarrow -- or directly into the hopper bin of the shotcrete machine, if possible.

    • 2

Shovel the mixture from the wheelbarrow into the hopper for the shotcrete machine. This is the container where the concrete is housed, then funneled through into the hose. Fill the container according to the specifications on the machine. Different-sized machines have different fill requirements.

    • 3

Turn on the machine and grasp the hose firmly in both hands. Open the nozzle and point it toward the base of the wall you are spraying with shotcrete. Move the nozzle side to side and adjust the flow as necessary with the tip until you have your desired coverage. Cover the surface by “painting” on the concrete, row by row, as you work your way up. Add more concrete to the machine as necessary.
