How to Flash the Porch Roof to My Mobile Home

Roofing the edge of a roof is the same process regardless if you are working with a modular home, mobile home, log cabin or any other type of structure. When you add a porch to the side of your mobile home, you need to flash the roof to keep any water from soaking into the eaves of the house under the edge of the roofing material, above the gutters. It is a simple process that requires only a few basic tools, allowing you to quickly and easily protect your new porch roof from rain damage.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill
  • 1-1/2 inch galvanized screws with rubber gaskets
  • Silicone caulking
  • L-flashing

Instructions

Install the corner flashing first, so that it slides up under the roof of the mobile home and wraps the existing flashing from the mobile home over to the new porch roof. The inside corner piece is L-flashing, but designed to wrap both sides of an inside corner. Smear the back side with silicone and screw it in place with the drill and screws.

Continue running the flashing along the new porch roof. If you are working with a new installation, simply smear silicone caulk along the back of both sides of the L-flashing and place it along the edge of the roof, then screw it in place with the drill and screws. Overlap the pieces so that there is never any breaking points along the run, and install your roofing material afterward.

Gently pry up the existing roofing materials (shingles or panels) that are in place on the porch roof, if necessary. Caulk the back sides of the L-flashing and then gently slide the horizontal section of the flashing up under the edge of the existing roof material, while the horizontal section wraps the edge of the roof. Screw the flashing in place and apply more silicone caulking to bond the roofing material to the flashing.
