Can You Unhook Lights on a Ryobi Bench Grinder?

Bench grinders have been a mainstay tool in the repertoire of many do-it-yourselfer for years. Attached to a bench, they normally have a grinder stone attached to one side and a wire brush or polishing wheel on the other, although you can alternate grinding wheels out depending on your project. The newer versions, like those on certain Ryobi bench grinders, have lights attached to help you see what you are doing in dim conditions, although can unhook the light if you see fit.
  1. Ease of Use

    • The older versions of bench grinders were simply a motor encased in metal with the two grinding wheels on either side. If you needed light you had to place one near the grinder, such as placing a clamp light on the edge of your work table. With attached lights, various Ryobi bench grinders allow you to free up that work space and instead have the light directly over the tool. They are easy to move and easy to use with adjustable necks so you can position the light as necessary for your projects.

    Adjustable

    • The most common type of light on a Ryobi grinder is the flexible stem light, which can be bent in many different directions and at multiple angles so you can have the best lighting for your project. In many ways, it is similar to a desk lamp with a flexible neck with a bulb attached to the end. The wiring for the bulb is housed in the flexible neck, which in turn goes into the body of the grinder and attaches to the circuits within.

    Removal

    • Removal of the light on a Ryobi grinder assumes some level of electronic expertise, or at least a basic working knowledge of how wiring works. Not only do you have to unplug the grinder from the wall to assure there is no power coming to the machine, but you also have to have the technical savvy to take apart the Ryobi grinder to access the inner workings and completely disconnect the light’s wiring so you can unhook the light.

    Warranty Issues

    • While you can technically unhook the light on a Ryobi bench grinder, you should only ever do so if the warranty for your bench grinder has already expired. Making alternations to the grinder while it is still under warranty will void the warranty, and should there be issues later on that you need the company to cover, you will be out of luck. Once the warranty is expired, however, you can tinker with and customize your bench grinder as you see fit, such as with removing and unhooking the light.
