How to Do a Horizontal Rebar for Block Walls

Building block walls is a fairly straightforward process that any do-it-yourselfer with some spare time and basic construction experience can accomplish, but advanced methods are needed from time to time. For example, while a small wall (around 4 feet in height) doesn’t need any reinforcement, anything larger than that will require placement of rebar in the wall. Steel rebar acts as a reinforcement when combined with the strength of concrete, and for large walls you will need to place it vertically as well as horizontally.

Instructions

Measure the height of your wall as well as your length and cut down pieces of rebar to fit. If you are building a wall that is longer or higher than a length of rebar, you will overlap the pieces by a few inches and secure them together. Otherwise, you can cut the pieces down with a miter saw and metal blade.

Place the rebar section on the tray of the saw, flush up against the fence, which is the back section of the tray. Hold it in place with your off-hand and pull the trigger with your main hand. Push the blade down into the rebar with your main hand on the trigger and handle.

Place the rebar at 24-inch intervals throughout the overall structure, both vertically and horizontally. With hollow bricks, the vertical sections will be in between the hollow sections of the bricks, but with solid bricks they will be in the joints. Tie off the horizontal sections to the vertical sections with wire ties. Also secure overlapping pieces with wire ties. Cover them in concrete to bury the rebar.
