Instructions

    • 1

Check with the local building inspector to find out about safety code requirements for a brick wall and to obtain a permit if necessary.

    • 2

Draw the wall to scale on graph paper using the brick layout you plan for the wall. Count the number of bricks needed, and purchase some extra bricks in case you need them.

    • 3

Create a concrete foundation, or footing, for your exterior brick wall by digging a trench with a shovel where the wall is planned. Dig the trench to specifications set forth by the building code. Use a quantity calculator, such as the Quickcrete Calculator, to determine how much premixed concrete you need, and pour the premixed concrete into the trench. Level the surface of the concrete with the trowel.

    • 4

Cover the cement-filled trench with a sheet of plastic. Let the concrete footing set for a few days until it becomes hardened.

    • 5

Spread an even 3/8-inch layer of premixed mortar on the footing. Use a quantity calculator to determine how much premixed mortar to buy. Use a trowel to “butter” the mortar 3/8-inch thick onto the end of the first brick. Place the brick on the footing with the hollow part facing up.

    • 6

Continue to lay the first row of bricks. Check the brick row with a level to make sure it is even. Use a 3/8-inch dowel to check the mortar levels between layers of brick so that the brick layers are evenly spaced. Tap the bricks into place with the end of the trowel. Use a plumb line to make sure the corners are vertical and straight. Prepare a guideline with pegs and string along the footing to indicate the top of the first row of bricks. Consult your drawing for the layout of the bricks, and complete the first row.

    • 7

Lay the remaining layers of bricks according to the pattern you designed, making sure to maintain the 3/8-inch mortar level between bricks. Use a level to make sure the bricks are laid evenly.

    • 8

Finish the wall by laying the top row of bricks with the hollow part facing down. Make the mortar neat by running a dowel across the joints, and brush away excess mortar with a stiff brush.

    • 9

Cover the wall with plastic to allow the mortar to set and to protect the wall from the elements.
