Look at the basement area to determine what type of beam you want for the area. Faux and wood beams are available in a variety of sizes and wood tones. These can resemble either a heavy plank for a smaller room or sturdy posts for a larger space.
Measure the distance from the ceiling to the floor with a sturdy measuring tape. Ask another person to assist you with the measurements. Write the measurements down.
Stretch the tape measure from one wall to the other or from one end of the ceiling to the opposite side. This is necessary if you are using the beams as rustic decor for the basement wall or ceiling. Applying painter's tape across the wall or ceiling where you want the beams to go is a wise way to ensure you measure in the right area.
Wear sturdy work gloves and safety goggles to cut the beams. Do this with a circular saw.
Place the beams in between the floor and ceiling or walls to ensure the cut is accurate and does not require further trimming.
