DIY Pool Deck

A pool deck is a popular do-it-yourself project because people enjoy lounging by their pools. If you are having a pool installed you know how expensive it can be, so building the pool deck yourself will save money and could be an enjoyable project. If you have a good plan in mind and the right equipment, your project will run much smoother. You also have several options, so choose one that fits your home and your breadth of knowledge and ability.
  1. Above-Ground Pool Decks

    • An above-ground pool is usually set in the back yard. It is portable and sometimes will come down in the winter. Keep this in mind when building your deck. It is a good idea to build the deck in sections, so it can be taken down easily. You can also simply drain the pool in the winter, if you plan on leaving it outside. Most above-ground pool decks are built on posts made from 4-by-4 beams to elevate the deck platform to the height of the pool. These decks can be built in trapezoid-shaped sections, which can be fit around the pool in modular fashion. Build one or two sections;you can add to them next season.

    In-Ground Pool Decks

    • In-ground pool decks can be built from wood, concrete or outdoor tile. To build a wood deck, use 2-by-6 boards as joists and set on 4-by-4 posts. Drive the posts into the ground or set them into holes filled with concrete, which acts as a foundation. Once the 2-by-6 boards are laid out as joists, the decking boards can be laid across them and nailed into place. These decks can be built in almost any shape and placed in any position around the pool.

    Tile Decks

    • A tile deck is another great option for an in-ground pool. The deck typically is installed on leveled ground, although it can also be installed over a slab of concrete poured around the pool. Your soil type will determine the material you use as an underlayer, and it is best to consult a professional before you start construction. Another option, if you aren't sure about installing your own tile deck, is yard bricks or flagstones. These can be set into leveled ground over a layer of crushed pebbles. High-quality yard bricks are long-lasting and provide a non-slick, attractive surface ideal for lounging and soaking up the sun.
