Do It Yourself: Home Office Remodeling Ideas

A home office can be a great way to reconnect with your family. More and more, many of the tasks in the modern workplace can be done over an electronic connection. When staying in communication with your work team is all that is needed, try staying at home and still contributing on those off-hour projects. Making the space your own is essential to effective use of a home office. Create a space that makes you more productive and relaxed at the same time.
  1. Furniture

    • A desk is an essential part of most offices. Choose one that meets your needs. If all you need is a work top to use your laptop from, consider a computer cart and save the space for a comfortable chair or small sofa. If you are in the market for a larger desk, consider office furniture resellers. They sell executive grade used furniture for a fraction of the cost.

Bookcases or other storage can be a nice addition. Not only can they store books, but they are also great places to display awards or showcase your favorite collection of nick nacks or memorabilia. Decide whether you prefer furniture pieces or built-ins. Antique shops have great deals on beautiful bookcases, and most local cabinet shops can design and install custom built-ins. If you have a closet in your office, visit your local home center for a plethora of storage and organizing options.

A comfortable chair or two is a necessity. Choose long-lasting fabrics and sturdy frames. Go with classic styles that won't end up as next year's garage sale item. Test out the chair before you buy it. Desk chairs especially need to provide good support and be comfortable.

    Décor

    • Paintings by local artists are a great way to enrich your work space and support your local art scene. Check the newspaper or Craigslist for art openings and gallery shows near you. You may be surprised at how affordable “real” art can be. Plus it will make your space one of a kind.

Rugs and window treatments are an easy and affordable way to make an impact on your space in a short amount of time. Choose colors and patterns that appeal to you. You are the one that will be living with these decisions. Try to choose items that compliment each other to keep your space from becoming busy.

Lighting can set the mood in any space. Choose table, desk or floor lamps to put light where it is needed, or to pull focus to specific elements. Try changing out the ceiling fixtures. Most light fixture replacement is very simple. Be safe and choose a fixture similar in construction to the existing fixture to make the switch easy.

    Wall Coverings

    • Paint, wallpaper and moldings are a great way to reinvent space. Choose colors that set the stage for your furniture and other choices. Neutrals can be good, but don't be afraid of bold choices. Wallpaper can camouflage repairs and other rough spots in walls. Choose something not too busy, but interesting. Go for classic rather than trendy for a long-lasting look.

Adding a chair rail or panel molding can make a room more elegant. Paint your moldings to match the wall for a subtle effect, or use contrasting color for more detail.
