DIY Stone Veneer on Concrete

Natural stones are expensive and difficult to install, but stone veneer is lightweight, easy to work with and affordable. Adding stone veneer to concrete requires some planning and preparation, but makes an excellent DIY project to add character inside or outside your home.
  1. Stone Veneer Options

    • Consumers will find a wide variety of stone veneers suitable for DIY projects. Choose engineered or real stone veneers available in panels or as individual tiles suitable for interior or exterior applications. Panels have individual stone veneer rocks attached to a backing product that allows for easier installation and provides moisture protection on the back of each stone. Styles of stone veneers are as numerous as the stones found in nature.

    Preparation

    • Preparation is the key to success for any DIY project; this is especially true when adding stone veneer to concrete. The concrete, whether it is a wall, floor or walkway, must be clean. If the concrete appears to have a very smooth surface, use an etching solution or grinder to rough-up the surface, so the mortar will adhere to the concrete.

Lath must be attached to the concrete surface, usually by nailing it down. Lath is a wire mesh fabric, similar to chicken wire, that will support the mortar and stones. Be sure to overlap edges and wrap the lath around corners. Follow manufacturer instructions for installation.

    Cutting Stone Veneer

    • A wet saw is necessary to cut real stone veneer panels or individual tiles. Rent, rather than buying, expensive tools or tools needed for only one DIY project, to save money.

    Choose the Right Mortar

    • Choose the right mortar for the application, for interior or exterior use. Mortar can be purchased premixed or as a dry powder you will mix with water yourself. Select a mortar of the same color as the grout to be used after the stone veneer has been installed.

    Tips

    • DIY stone veneer will have a professional appearance if you pay attention to the details. Keep the stones clean during installation. Excess mortar on tools and on your hands will soil the veneer. Once the mortar dries on the stone it is difficult to remove. Maintain straight lines during installation when using square or rectangular cut stone veneer.

    Safety Warning

    • Always wear safety glasses and follow safety procedures when cutting stone veneer or the metal mesh and when nailing through concrete.
