DIY: Your Own Game Room

A game room is the perfect place to relax and have some fun after a long day of work. Furthermore, it can be a great way to keep children entertained while at home. Regardless of whether your home's game room will feature an elegant bar,a billiards table or tons of toys and video games, there are several main things to consider.
  1. Layout

    • Deciding on a layout for any room can be intimidating to people who do not consider themselves "decorators." However, the easiest way to layout a room is to first define its function.

For instance, if the game room is going to include a billiards table, the table needs to be relatively centered so players can shoot from any side. In addition, billiards' storage (pool cue racks and ball racks) needs to be strategically placed around the table. Finally, seating options need to be given to both players and spectators.

Even if the room is simply going to function as a den, serious thought needs to be given to where the electronics will be (televisions, video games, etc.), where the furniture will go (recliners, sectionals, sofas) and so on. Make sure to use the room dimensions and shuffle everything around before committing to a decision.

    Flooring

    • Flooring is often an overlooked feature of a game room. However, the type and style of flooring can dramatically increase the functionality and look of a room. If the game room will be an adult space that has a bar or will be a primary party room, then a laminate or tile floor may be the best option. Both laminate and tile floors offer easy clean up and hold up very well.

Game rooms that will be used as a place for children to play will most likely be best with carpeting. Carpeting allows kids to crawl and play on it without any real fear of being injured. Moreover, since the game room is often used as a lounge and relaxation space, having the comfort of carpeting over the look of hardwood may be the right decision.

    Decor

    • Homeowners can go about decorating a game room in a number of ways. The game room decor can simply match the decor of the rest of the house. For example, if the rest of the house is traditionally decorated (landscape pictures, mirrors, etc), the decor can flow into the game room to help with uniformity.

On the other hand, homeowners can decide to decorate the game room as a unique space. If billiards will be played in the room, homeowners can use a pool hall as their primary inspiration. In addition, a billiards-themed carpet can be added to enhance the effect. Ultimately, the decor decisions are a combination of function and taste. However, if you find yourself unable to decide, consider using a themed room (like the pool hall).
