Trace a gun rack pattern onto the surface of two 6-inch wide boards with a pencil. The pattern consists of a vertical section that is 3 inches wide and 36 inches tall, with five "hook" shaped notches protruding on one side. The hooks have an inner diameter of at least 2 inches and the "hook" section has a thickness of 1 inch.
Cut out this pattern using a band saw or jig saw. Then sand the edges of the hooks with a spindle sander or by hand with 120-grit sandpaper. Use a 120-grit spindle sanding bit on a power drill if you do not have a stationary spindle sander.
Cut two 26-inch lengths of 3-inch wide pine or maple boards that are at least 1 inch thick, on a table saw.
Set the gun rack sides which you created in steps one and two upright with the hooks pointing forward, on a work bench, and set the two 26-inch long boards between them. Place one 3 inches from the top and one 3 inches from the bottom.
Drill two pilot holes into each of the 26-inch boards with a 1/16th-inch bit through the sides of the rack. Then attach the 26-inch boards to the sides with 2-inch wood screws and a power drill.
Drill two pilot holes, 16 inches apart into the top 26-inch board with a pilot drill bit. Locate two studs on your wall about 3 feet from the ground using an electric stud finder. Place the gun rack on the wall, line up the pilot holes with the studs, and mount with two 3-inch wood screws.
