Homemade Rifle Rack

A gun rack is an excellent way to keep your guns stored and organized. There are very simple homemade gun racks that someone with a little woodworking knowledge will find easy to make. These are standing gun racks that store between four and six guns and, of course, they may be expanded to your own needs. They are designed for standard-size hunting rifles, but you can customize yours to fit your particular stock of gun.

Instructions

    • 1

Trace a gun rack pattern onto the surface of two 6-inch wide boards with a pencil. The pattern consists of a vertical section that is 3 inches wide and 36 inches tall, with five "hook" shaped notches protruding on one side. The hooks have an inner diameter of at least 2 inches and the "hook" section has a thickness of 1 inch.

    • 2

Cut out this pattern using a band saw or jig saw. Then sand the edges of the hooks with a spindle sander or by hand with 120-grit sandpaper. Use a 120-grit spindle sanding bit on a power drill if you do not have a stationary spindle sander.

    • 3

Cut two 26-inch lengths of 3-inch wide pine or maple boards that are at least 1 inch thick, on a table saw.

    • 4

Set the gun rack sides which you created in steps one and two upright with the hooks pointing forward, on a work bench, and set the two 26-inch long boards between them. Place one 3 inches from the top and one 3 inches from the bottom.

    • 5

Drill two pilot holes into each of the 26-inch boards with a 1/16th-inch bit through the sides of the rack. Then attach the 26-inch boards to the sides with 2-inch wood screws and a power drill.

    • 6

Drill two pilot holes, 16 inches apart into the top 26-inch board with a pilot drill bit. Locate two studs on your wall about 3 feet from the ground using an electric stud finder. Place the gun rack on the wall, line up the pilot holes with the studs, and mount with two 3-inch wood screws.
