Measuring an area for square footage involves a basic mathematical formula, that can be easily applied once you've measured the area accurately. All you'll need is a calculator and a tape measure to get this job done, then you'll be on your way to completing that project that's been on the drawing board.

     Measure the length of the area in feet from end to end using a tape measure. Double check your measurements for accuracy.

     Measure the width of the area in feet using a tape measure. Double check your measurements for accuracy.

     Multiply the length by the width of the area to get the square footage. For example: A room that is 10 feet long by 12 feet wide is 120 square feet.

     Round the measurement up to the nearest 10 feet if measuring acreage for landscaping or rooms for home improvement projects. This will help you to avoid coming up short on materials for your project. For example: An area that measures 30 feet, 3 inches long, by 20 feet wide: 30.25 x 20= 605. Round up 605 to 610.
