Hand Riveter Operating Instructions

Rivets are metal stud-like objects that are inserted into pieces of metal to hold them together. Inserting rivets is done through the use of a device called a riveter. Riveter devices can be electric or pneumatic and are called rivet guns. There are also hand held riveters which are operated manually and require more effort than their counterparts. Using a hand riveter is useful when securing thin pieces of metal or softer metal types such as aluminum.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the tip of the hand riveter to ensure that you have the correct tip attached. To test the tip, insert a rivet into the hole in the center of the tip. The rivet should be held snugly by the tip and not fall out if you turn it upside down. Additional heads are supplied with the hand riveter. To switch out heads, simply pull out the old head using your fingers and insert the new one.

    • 2

Insert a rivet into the hand riveter with the flat head of the rivet facing away from the device.

    • 3

Clamp two piece of metal together tightly using clamps so that they do not move when the rivet goes through them.

    • 4

Insert wooden boards under the pieces of metal if they are laying on a flat work surface. This elevates the metal slightly to allow the rivet to insert properly. If the metal is mounted on a vertical surface, this step is not required.

    • 5

Place the end of the rivet against the metal in the location where you want to secure it to the other piece of metal.

    • 6

Push in on the hand riveter with firm pressure and squeeze the handles together with your hand. The rivet is forced into the metal pieces and secures them together.
