Basement Remodel Checklist

Remodeling a basement involves a financial investment. Creating a checklist for your remodel can ensure you do not have costly mistakes or forget an important aspect of the remodel. Completing a basement remodel may last a few months or a year depending on the extent of your personal remodeling design.
  1. Financing

    • Talk to numerous banks in your area and find out how much finance you qualify for before remodeling your basement. Unless you are paying with cash you will need to obtain financing. This could determine what you can or cannot remodel in your basement and it gives you a starting point for planning your basement remodel.

    Local Inspector

    • Hire a local contractor to inspect your basement before planning your basement remodel. Not all basements are capable of being finished complete with carpet and fabrics. Ask the contractor about mold issues that may arise after the remodel and if you have any potential water issues in your basement. Tackle this first, if it arises, before starting your remodeling project. This ensures your basement can handle the remodel.

    What to Avoid

    • Make a list of items to avoid in your basement. The inspector will tell you what your basement can and cannot store. Commonly items such as books, linens and clothing cannot be stored in a basement. If your inspector does not relay this information to you, ask him for the information.

    Plan

    • Plan your remodel once your financing is in place and your basement is inspected. Take into consideration what the inspector told you about any complications that may arise. Graph your design and include every item you wish to include for your remodel, such as a bar.

    Permits

    • Obtain permits you need for your remodel before you start the remodeling process. Permit requirements vary in each locale.
