How to Edge Granite Tile

Granite tile is attractive and durable. It is popular for counters, floors and walls. Granite tiles have squared-off edges that can be left exposed at the edge of a project, such as a wall corner or exposed edge of a counter. If you prefer a rounded edge, you can round the exposed edges of your granite tiles yourself with a rubbing stone or sandpaper. Since the tile is solid granite, the rounded edge will match the rest of the tile.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your granite tiles and let the grout dry. Edging your tiles once they are in place makes it easier to round the tile edges consistently.

    • 2

Wrap coarse carbide sandpaper around a wood block, stapling it to the wood to keep it in place. If you have a masonry rubbing stone, skip this step.

    • 3

Hold the rubbing stone or sandpaper block at an angle to the edge of a leftover piece of granite tile and rub the tool along edge of the tile until it is rounded. Experiment until you have found an angle of rounding you like.

    • 4

Round the edges of the installed granite tiles to match the practice tile. Use long, even strokes across multiple tiles to create a consistent edge. If you are using sandpaper, switch to fine-grade carbide sandpaper when you are almost finished to create a smooth edge.
