Waterproofing Stucco

Stucco can be used on walls inside a building or to finish concrete outside. The material eventually chips off if it builds up too much moisture--for instance, if it's in a basement that's frequently damp--so it is important to waterproof the stucco to prevent this problem. The process isn't difficult for the do-it-yourselfer.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the paint tape on the edges of your stucco, such as where a stucco wall meets the ceiling. Apply the tape anywhere stucco meets with a non-stucco plane, since that does not need to be waterproofed.

    • 2

Stir the sealant until its consistency and its color are uniform with one another, using a paint stick. Thoroughly scrape off any sealant clinging to the sides of the container.

    • 3

Dip the paintbrush into the sealant. Brush the edges of the stucco wall. Your paint lines should be about four inches wide.

    • 4

Pour the sealant directly into the paint tray.

    • 5

Wet the paint roller thoroughly with the sealant. Roll it in the mixture a few times so it is well-coated.

    • 6

Roll the sealant directly onto the wall. Pay special attention to surfaces toward the ceiling so you know whether you fully coated the area.

    • 7

Apply another coat if your sealant manufacturer recommends it, and let the sealant dry according to the directions.

    • 8

Remove the paint tape once the sealant has dried.
