How to Design a Hair Studio

The success of a hair studio depends not only on the clientele, but also on how the salon looks and feels for new and returning clients. When you are designing your hair studio, it is important to make it feel warm, stylish, and inviting. Many clients like to escape to a salon not only to renew their appearance, but also to relax while experiencing their beauty treatments. By incorporating color and style with the layout, you can create an ideal space for employees and clients alike.

Determine how many workstations you may fit in your hair studio. You will also need space for a waiting area, washing stations, reception desk, staff break room, and storage space for your studio.

    • 2

Keep the layout spacious by spreading out the stations. Design the layout so the client sees a waiting area and reception desk when they walk inside. Separate the space by placing a faux wall display behind the reception desk, and create a comfortable seating area where guests can wait.

    • 3

Set up the design of the salon through the waiting area. For example, in a contemporary salon, use sleek simple furniture and contrast it with comfortable textiles like carpeting. Use wall décor and accent lighting to keep the space inviting, but not too bright.

    • 4

Place the hair-cutting stations along the studio walls behind the faux display to keep the areas separate. Section off the cutting station from the washing area by hanging drapery to provide a calm and private environment for the client.

    • 5

Designate an area of the salon as storage for supplies and a staff break room. If there are not full-length walls, use partitions to section off the area easily.

    • 6

Bring in paint swatches to the studio to determine the best color for the space with the provided lighting. If you want a calming hair studio experience, select tranquil or earth-tone colors such as sage, lavender, cream or rose. For a vibrant studio, go with bolder colors like green, blue or yellow.

Create an area in the front of the studio for selling retail products. Simple glass shelving against a wall keeps the area looking tidy and sleek. Keep the products down to a minimum to save space and to keep from spending too much money on unused items. Add extra storage around the salon by adding sleek glass or wood shelving between stylist workstations.
