Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark with pencil at 1-inch intervals along the length of the 6-inch cedar log. Cut along each mark to create six separate 1-inch long by 2-inch diameter log sections.

    • 2

Measure and mark with pencil at 12-inch intervals along the floor in the area where the rail is to be installed.

    • 3

Place one 1-inch section on each of the six marks. Drill two screws down through each 1-inch section to mount it to the floor.

    • 4

Cut a 2-inch diameter circle out of one end of each of the 30-inch logs that are 4 inches in diameter. Use the drill press and the 2-inch diameter circle cutter to remove a 1-inch deep wood section from the bottom end of each log. This will create an entrance for the 1-inch thick by 2-inch diameter circles to mount the posts to the ground.

    • 5

Place one 30-inch post over each 1-inch thick, 2-inch diameter log section so the small section enters inside the bottom edge of the 30-inch log. Place four screws around the bottom of the post to mount them to the 1-inch thick by 2-inch diameter sections on the floor to keep the posts from moving.

    • 6

Lay the 6-foot long cedar log on a flat surface and mark every 12 inches along the length of the log. Measure and mark 2 inches in from each end as well. These marks will let you know exactly where the cedar logs will be installed for rail posts.

    • 7

Cut a 4-inch circle at each marked location by centering the circle cutter over each of the six marks. These circles should be 1-inch deep and will align with the posts.

    • 8

Line the 4-inch diameter holes cut into the 6-foot log over the posts. Tap the log onto the posts gently, and mount the log to the posts by screwing in two 3-inch screw through the top of the 6-foot log directly into each 30-inch post.
