Roof Tile Colors

Roof tiles give your home a charmingly traditional look, but that does not mean that you have to stick with traditional colors. Concrete tiles can be mixed using nearly any color you can come up with, while glazed tiles come in a more limited, but still varied, range. Choose the tile colors that best suit your taste and the look that you are trying to bring about in your home.
  1. Terra-Cotta

    • Terra-cotta is a rich red-brown color and is the natural color of baked clay tile. This very warm color comes from the high iron percentage in the terra-cotta clay. This color is reminiscent of the American Southwest, and adds a warm, Spanish touch to the rest of your home. This color does well with homes that have white exteriors or natural color exteriors like taupe, beige or tan.

    Blends

    • Blends are tiles that contain two colors, shading from one to the other on the same tile. These tiles create a variegated effect on your home's roof and, depending on the blend that you choose, can create either a dramatic effect or a very subtle one. For example, when you are looking at a single clay tile blend that goes from tan to beige, the effect will be subtle, almost as though the roof is dappled with shadows. On the other hand, one tile that shades from burgundy and tan blend would be more dramatic, giving your home accents in bold colors. If you choose a bold, bright mixture, keep the exterior walls of your home subdued to complement it.

    Cool Colors

    • Cool colors give your home a tall, airy look. Choose paler colors, like light blues and greens, to give the house a friendly, open look. If you want a more grounded look, consider using navy blue tiles or jade green tiles. One way to get a watery look is to use tiles that are all different shades of the same color base. Another effect is to tile the roofs of the main building in a deep color and then the roofs of surrounding outbuildings, like sheds and garages, in paler shades.

    Warm Colors

    • If you want to give your home a sense of warmth and texture, use tiles in reds, browns and even yellows. This effect can lower roofs that might otherwise look too tall or overbearing. Use of a single color gives you a traditional effect, while using a number of different shades or colors gives you a more visually arresting effect.
