How to Measure a Counter Top Face for Square Footage

Figuring out the square footage of your counter tops is important if you plan to buy new ones or have a contractor come modify the ones you already have. Some contractors will actually charge you to come out and measure before they do any work, so learning to do it on your own might actually save you some money. There are two basic kinds of counter tops you might be measuring: square or rectangular, and irregularly-shaped. There are different ways to measure for square footage depending on your counter top shape.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Square or Rectangular Counter Tops

    • 1

Measure the width of the counter top, from front to back, in inches.

    • 2

Measure the length of the counter top from one side to the other, in inches.

    • 3

Use a calculator to multiply the width times the length. Divide the sum by 144 to find your square footage.

    Irregularly-Shaped Counter Tops

    • 4

Find the square footage of a trapezoid-shaped counter top (one that looks like a triangle with the tip cut off) by measuring the long side in inches, measuring the short side in inches, and then measuring the length between them in inches. On the calculator, divide the length by 2 and write it down. Then add the measurements from the long and short sides together, and write that answer down. Now multiply the two answers you wrote down together, divide this total by 144, and you have your square footage.

    • 5

Measure the length of the base of a triangular counter top in inches, divide it by 2, and write the answer down. Then find the longest point of the counter top and measure the length from the base to the top in inches. Multiply the length by the answer you wrote down for the base divided by 2, and divide by 144.

Figure out the square footage for a round counter top by measuring the entire length from one end to the other in inches, then dividing that by 2 and writing it down. Now use the calculator to multiply that answer by itself, and then multiply the result by 3.14. Divide the answer by 144 and you have your square footage.
