How to Locate Floor Plans for an Old Home

Old homes are full of character, charm and history. On the down side these homes often need some additional tender loving care. Homeowners invest time and money in remodeling or renovating their old homes. Before embarking on any construction, your contractor should review the home's floor plan. Floor plans provide the contractor with the structural details and specifications of your home. Floor plans for older homes are not always readily available. However, you may find those floor plans with a trip to your local city hall.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect information about your house. Gather information such as your home's street address, the date the home was built, home photographs and home style.

    • 2

Visit your local city hall. Speak with a staff person in the building inspector's office. The inspector's office maintains a database of building permits, floor plans and elevation drawings. Request a copy of your floor plan. Provide the staff with proof of your home address such as your driver's license or a utility bill.

Request a review of fire insurance maps for your neighborhood. The maps date as far back as the 1800s. Fire insurance maps include the type of construction materials used on your home and 3-D drawings of the homes in your neighborhood. These maps show the original structure of the home, including the arrangement of porches, doorways and windows.

Research the city archives. The city hall keeps various records on the local communities. These records include old maps, photographs and building plans.
