How to Value a Remodel by Square Foot

Whether you are remodeling your entire home or just a few areas within your home, remodeling is an exciting project that leaves you with the exact outcome that you want. You may have outgrown the style of your space or just want to change the design of your home prior to moving in. Regardless of the reason, remodeling can also be an expensive project. In order to determine the square-foot value of your remodeling project, you only need to follow a few simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the materials that you plan on using for the entire space that you plan to remodel. Make sure to include the total price of the cost of the flooring you choose, any cabinetry and paint as well as other materials you will use for the remodeling project.

    • 2

Add together the cost of all the materials you will use as well as any labor if you plan on hiring a contractor.

    • 3

Calculate the square footage of the space you plan on remodeling. If you have a 200-square-foot bedroom and you want to remodel the 75-square-foot bathroom as well as the kitchen, which is 100 square feet, the total square footage of your remodeling project is 375 square feet.

    • 4

Divide the total cost of the materials and labor by the total square footage of the project. For instance, if all materials and labor cost $60,000, you divide this amount by 375 and have a figure of $160. The value of your remodeling project is $160 per square foot.
