Measure straight up from the stairs at the top and bottom and make a mark where the railing is to be placed. Generally a railing is around 32 to 38 inches above the stairs.
Measure the distance between the marks to give you an idea of how much material is needed for the railing. Divide the inches by 12 to get the number of feet needed.
Count the number of railing brackets you need to hold the railing up. You need one for each end and others spaced every 4 to 6 feet apart.
Go to a home improvement store and select the railing you want. Or if you are planning on carving a railing yourself, select the wood material you want to use. Pick out enough length to cover the distance that you measured plus and extra foot for carving leeway or to ensure you have enough.
Add up the cost of the material plus the cost of the brackets and hardware to get a close estimate of the job.
