Mark your yard where the sides of your covered porch will go. Typically at least one side of a covered porch is flush with the side of your home. The location of the other side of your covered porch depends on exactly how wide you want your porch to be when it is built.
Determine how long you want your covered porch to be. This will be based largely on your personal preferences as well as the zoning codes in your area. Mark this location in your yard.
Measure from the mark you made in your yard in step 2 to the start of your home. The number you are left with is the width of your covered porch.
Measure the distance between the two marks you made in your yard in step 1. This number is the length of your covered porch.
Multiply the length of your covered porch by the width of your covered porch to find the total square footage of yard space that your porch will take up when it is completely constructed.
