How to Determine Labor Costs on a Kitchen Remodel

Remodeling a kitchen is a project that you can do on your own or hire a professional. Unless you are experienced and have the time to complete this job on your own, hiring a contractor can get expensive due to labor costs. To determine the labor costs on a kitchen remodel, you have to do your research on contractors and determine which one is best for you. It may not always be best to go with the cheaper labor costs.

Obtain quotes from at least three or four contractors to compare their labor rates. Some contractors have a set percentage based on the amount of the materials. For instance, if your materials in total cost $25,000, a contractor that charges a set percentage may charge you 10 percent, or $2,500, in labor costs.

Another contractor may set his labor fee depending on the amount of time it take him to complete the job. In this case, if you have extremely expensive materials, but it only takes him four days to complete the job, you may end up paying only $1,000 for labor costs with $25,000 worth of material.

Research the contractors that you have obtained quotes from and determine which ones have good customer satisfaction ratings. Also double check their experience level with kitchen remodeling; some contractors do not specialize in kitchen remodeling, yet they are highly proficient with remodeling decks, bathrooms and other areas of the home.

Either way, you want to be confident the contractor you should can get the job done in the kitchen. It may be worth it to go with the more expensive option if your chances are higher that your kitchen will come out exactly the way you want.

Discuss any bargains that you can with the remaining contractors to see if they are willing to give you a discount. After any bargaining is done, obtain the changes and final estimates in writing and make your decision on which contractor to go with. The contractor that you choose will determine the labor costs you will pay on a kitchen remodel.
