How to Set Up a Science Lab in Your Home

Conducting science experiments can be very exciting. At the same time, they can be very dangerous and precautions need to be taken. For this reason, most science labs exist in companies or high schools, where safety guidelines have been in place for years. However, for non-scientists who would like to continue conducting experiments after high school, setting up a science lab in your home can safely be done simply by following a few basic steps.

Instructions

Choose a location in your home. This may seem like an easy task, but there are a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration prior to choosing a space. The room should have ample counter space, good lighting, running water and temperature control. There should be some sort of ventilation, such as an exhaust fan or at least a few windows that can be opened. Additionally, the flooring should not carpet, as chemicals in a lab can easily be spilled.

Buy storage cabinets that can be locked. Keeping dangerous chemicals away from the reach of children or animals is a very important safety feature of any science lab. Also make sure to put labels on all chemicals.

Buy safety equipment. Goggles, gloves, a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher are essential.

    • 4

Purchase lab supplies specific to the type of experiments you wish to perform. This may include a microscope, test tubes, scissors and various chemicals.
