      With a few measurements and drawings, a garage can easily be designed to fit any needs.

      Measure the garage. Decide what the primary function of the garage will be. If the garage is going to be used as combination of workshop and office, determine which part of the garage will be dedicated to tools and which part of the garage will be dedicated to an office. A garage can be turned into any type of room, from sewing room to family room.

      Create a layout of the garage. This can be done with graph paper or one of the many software drawing programs available. This is an extremely important step. Include all plumbing fixtures, such as a water heater or air conditioning unit, and electrical outlets. Anything not being removed from the space should be included in the drawing. Also add in any windows or doors. It is easier to work around preexisting structures rather than remove them.

      Floor to ceiling storage can make any garage an organized garage.

      Determine the size of any items, such as a car, freezer or furniture that will occupy space in the garage on a permanent basis. Taking into account the space for these items determines what space is left for structures, such as workbenches or shelving units. If a car that will occupy the garage regularly, the design needs to work around the car.

      Calculate available wall space. Garage design revolves around available wall space. Wall units designed for storage will be used to increase the amount of space for items that normally create clutter in a garage. Note any electrical outlets because shelving and wall units need to be worked around them.

      Create drawings of the wall space, noting obstructions, such as windows and doors. If a space is used, such as the area over a washer or dryer, it could be a place for a hanging bicycle rack. The spaces between windows and doors and between pipes can be turned into useful storage space. A good design does maximizes the area's potential.
