How to Make a Home Theatre Room

Bonus rooms are becoming increasingly popular in houses these days, and one of the popular options for these rooms is a home theater. A home theater can be created in any size room on any size budget. A home theater room is a great alternative to spending money at the movies each weekend, and can provide a space for a family to gather and watch a movie or a favorite show. A media room is a great idea for those who would like to keep the electronics and video games confined to one area of the home.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a diagram of the room to better locate the speakers and the TV with the seating arrangements. Locate the rear speakers behind the main seating area pointing toward the TV. The front speakers should be on either side of the TV pointing out toward the seating area. Place the seating so everyone can get an unobstructed view of the TV.

    • 2

Paint the room a darker color or consider hanging fabric over your existing walls. The fabric can help insulate the room for sound. Hang blackout shades or curtains to block as much light as possible from entering the room. This will provide you with the best picture during the day.

    • 3

Choose seating that will be comfortable for both 3 minutes and 3 hours. Consider individual theater seating that is available from most major furniture retailers, ottomans and floor pillows to give everyone a comfortable place to watch. Add a step that is about 6 inches tall for the back row seating, so everyone has an unobstructed view.

Install all of your audio-visual equipment near the final location of the TV. This includes your cable or satellite box, surround sound and DVD player. Run the wires to the surround sound speakers, from the receiver, along the edge where the carpet meets the wall. Then paint them the same color as the walls to blend in.

Mount the TV on the wall or consider using a projector TV instead. Mount the screen, making sure there are no air vents that will make the screen move while the air conditioner is blowing. Some rooms have vents in the floor and some have them in the ceiling. Plan the location of the screen accordingly.

Attach the cables and wires from your chosen unit, whether it be cable or satellite, and plug in the surround sound from the receiver to the TV according to the manufactures recommendations.
